Cape Verde Islands – A little taste of the Caribbean

Cape Verde is tipped as being a holiday hotspot in the very near future and the stampede to invest in the Cape Verde property market is definitely hotting up.

The Cape Verde Islands are an attractive choice for many reasons. This stunning archipelago is the nearest tropical island location for Western Europe, with year-round sunshine, fantastic fishing and great water sports, it’s a little taste of the Caribbean. Property prices are currently low, with beach-front apartments available from around only €60,000, but these are expected to rise by 70 per cent within the next two years. Transport links are improving; a new airport is being built bringing flights direct from the UK, making the journey only a 5½ hour flight and new roads are being built on most islands to accommodate the foreseen arrival of the tourists.

The Cape Verdeans are welcoming the influx of jobs, training and better facilities that this boom is bringing them, but the Cape Verde government is taking heed of the problems that have arisen in other tourist destinations. The small British ex-pat population already on the islands describe Cape Verde as being like the Canary Islands twenty years ago and the government is determined not to see an uncontrolled explosion of tourism on the same scale that the Canaries suffered in the 80´s.

So, with decades of experience in the tourism market, and as the closest European outpost to Cape Verde, the Canaries, determined not to miss out have also entered this potentially lucrative market. The Canarian Government has launched a Programme of Cooperation with Cape Verde that will continue until at least 2007 and as part of this scheme it currently sends €800,000 a year to Cape Verde to promote economic and social cohesion between the two island groups.

With all this planning and co-operation Cape Verde is set to be one of the best tourist destinations for the European Market in the coming years.
