CAPE VERDE MAP

When you think of Cabo Verde or Cape Verde it is easy to imagine it as being one island but in fact the Cape Verde map consists of 10 main islands and 8 islets split into two major groups, the Barlaventos (northern island group) and the Sotaventos (southern island group). Each island has its own distinct characteristics giving you plenty of choice even though only nine of the Cape Verde islands are actually inhabited with one, Santa Luzia, being completely uninhabited and currently a Natural Reserve. All of these islands are volcanic, but an active volcano only exists on one of the islands, that of Fogo.

CAPE VERDE MAP - FOGO

Fogo is the fourth biggest of the Cape Verde islands. Originally named San Filipe, Fogo or “Fire” was renamed because of its volcano, which is famous for being one of the most perfectly shaped cones in the world. Active right up to the 18th Century, when the main cone ceased activity, the volcano is in fact the main tourist attraction on Fogo taking a little over 4 hours to climb to the peak. Reaching a height of 2829 meters over the densely forested plateaus and the plantations of fruit and coffee beans it truly has the most spectacular views and scenery of the whole of the Cape Verde Islands.

CAPE VERDE MAP - MAIO

Maio has the second largest airport in Cape Verde which means a tremendous potential for tourists and property developers are already starting to show interest. Maio is a quiet and friendly place, and while being dry, arid and essentially flat, with very little irrigated land the island does boast the biggest forest park in the Cape Verde archipelago. The coastline of Maio has numerous very beautiful white sandy beaches and the island has managed to escape from too much pollution. The varied and abundant sea life will delight any fisherman, and the vast deserted beaches supporting a number of species of sea birds should thrill the bird watchers

CAPE VERDE MAP - SAL

Originally named “Llana” or flat when it was discovered in 1640, the Cape Verde Island of Sal was renamed when a lagoon in a crater of a now extinct volcano was discovered to produce large amounts of salt after the rains. Sal is flat and relatively small with only two major settlements, but it has some splendid beaches and all the facilities necessary for the practice of sea sports, even providing lessons for beginners if required. There is a choice of fishing, windsurfing, scuba diving, game rooms, minigolf, volleyball, basketball and tennis courts. The International Airport here makes Sal the gateway to the Cape Verde archipelago and the island has always prided itself on providing high quality tourism.

CAPE VERDE MAP - SANTO ANTAO

Santo Antaño is the second largest of the Cape Verde islands and offers the archipelagos most spectacular landscapes, especially after the summer rains when the hills are green. The island is halved by a mountain range that runs from northeast to southeast making the climate dry in the south, cool in the centre and humid in the northeast and quite naturally the vegetation varies dramatically between these regions. The higher areas are covered with trees like eucalyptus, cypress and pine while in the south there is dry arid land and herbaceous vegetation. The otherwise inaccessible landscape of the island is intersected by sturdily constructed footpaths that make it a hiker’s paradise.

CAPE VERDE MAP - SAO NICOLAU

Greener than Sao Vicente but less spectacular in landscape than Santo Antao, the Cape Verde Island of Sao Nicolau is a very quiet and religious place. Situated in the north of the archipelago its shape is similar to the African continent it lays next too and it is full of rich architectural history and acres of groves of eucalyptus and sisal trees. Here you will also find the “Rocha Escrita” or inscripted rock. This is a volcanic rock on which has been inscribed a number of rather undecipherable letters and words. Some believe them to be from the first visitors to the Archipelago and other attribute them to the pirates.

CAPE VERDE MAP - SAO VICENTE

Sao Vicente is the third smallest of the islands that make up the Cape Verde archipelago but it is home to the countries second largest city, Mindelo, as well as an airport and an 18 hole golf course. In the past sailors from many different nationalities met together in the local bars and cafes of Mindelo and it soon became an important cultural centre where music, literature and sports were developed and encouraged, an activity which it still cultivates to this day. Cape Verde’s biggest musical festival is held here every year at the end of August to celebrate the full moon and all the local sports in the Cape Verde archipelago are said to come from Sao Vicente.
